Dr. Chewe Luo is a distinguished paediatrician and health scientist with a wealth of clinical expertise, as well as extensive experience in project and programme management. With over 20 years of remarkable achievements, Dr. Luo has led clinical and research teams, shaped global health policies, and spearheaded the design, implementation, and monitoring of health and HIV programmes across the globe.

Born and raised in Zambia, Dr. Luo began her journey in medicine at the University Teaching Hospital, the largest referral hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, where she honed her skills as a paediatrician. Her passion for child health and commitment to tackling HIV/AIDS led her to further her education in the UK. She pursued a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics at the prestigious University of Zambia, School of Medicine, equipping herself with a solid foundation in pediatric care.

Driven by her desire to make a broader impact, Dr. Luo embarked on a transformative academic journey, obtaining a Masters in Tropical Paediatrics and a PhD from the esteemed Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool University, School of Medicine in the United Kingdom. Her groundbreaking research and contributions to the field of tropical health have earned her recognition and admiration from peers worldwide.

With a remarkable blend of clinical expertise and research acumen, Dr. Luo ventured into the field of public health, where she sought to bridge the gap between medical science and policy implementation. Her exceptional abilities in formulating and brokering health and HIV programme policies and strategies attracted the attention of prominent global organizations.

Having worked extensively with the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF), Dr. Luo most recent appointment was Chief of the HIV/AIDS Section and Associate Director in the Programme Division at UNICEF's headquarters in New York. Her leadership role allows her to drive significant advancements in pediatric health and advocate for the most vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Luo played a pivotal role as the technical team leader for children and AIDS country programme scale-up, where she spearheaded efforts to expand access to essential services for children affected by HIV/AIDS. Her unwavering dedication to improving maternal and child health has established her as a Senior Programme Advisor on HIV and Maternal Child Health for UNICEF.

Dr. Luo's influence and impact have transcended borders, as she has collaborated with numerous governments, health professionals, and organizations across the globe. Her work has taken her to North America, including Canada and the United States, as well as Europe, encompassing Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

Moreover, her contributions have extended to sub-Saharan Africa, where she has engaged with several countries in both Eastern and Southern Africa, as well as Western and Central Africa, including Nigeria, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Dr. Luo has also left an indelible mark on South Asia, working diligently in India, and making a difference in East Asia and the Pacific through her collaborations in Cambodia, China, Fiji, the Pacific Islands, Hong Kong, Japan, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, and beyond.

Dr. Luo's exceptional leadership qualities extend beyond her clinical and advocacy roles. She has successfully mobilized substantial project and programme funds, fostering fruitful partnerships with a wide range of donors, multilateral organizations, civil society, foundations, research institutions, and academic bodies across the global North and South.

Recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Luo has been appointed as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, Scotland. This prestigious honor is a testament to her exceptional knowledge, dedication, and commitment to advancing paediatric health and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
